Hello House of Hackney
Hello House of Hackney

We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we are borrowing it from our children.”Frieda and Javvy. Even the names possess a kind of razzle dazzle, a magic, a bohemian rhythm. On a brisk December day last year, I was lucky enough to step inside the world of these two exquisite humans - the founders behind House of Hackney.

(a cute dog and site visit are not conducive to productivity)
⠀
fact~⠀
There are over 50 billion pins on Pinterest. ⠀
⠀
At a guess I’d say 500 million are of kitchens and I’m sure most of you have a ‘dream kitchens’ Pinterest board. ⠀
⠀
Just like any space in your home the kitchen ideally should work with colours and materials used elsewhere. ⠀
Clearly there are other major factors to consider:⠀
— storage (one can never have too much)⠀
— layout + access (direction of traffic) ⠀
— light etc etc⠀
⠀
The use of materials sits at my no:1 ⠀
Think really hard about ‘how will the space make me feel?’⠀
Don’t just think kitchen, think kitchen living.
⠀
Recently, I got thinking about the best way to describe the ‘how’ behind what I do (my IG bio was due a refresh and there is a 150 letter limit) ⠀
Nothing like a tight word count to nail your strategy.⠀
⠀
But my whirl of thoughts have shaped up well. ⠀
Basically, my ‘how’ rests alongside my why and the two are creating good things. ⠀
⠀
So for me, it can be summed up as; ⠀
A fresh outlook on interior design —⠀
embracing simplicity, respecting individuality, channeling thoughtful spaces ♡
⠀
For the love of the land — ⠀
Life & Leisure magazine described the beautiful landscape at @cliftonglamping as rustic-luxe-country-chic. ⠀
Fine words for an extraordinary place. ⠀
There is something comforting about being close to nature, it’s a reminder that bigger things exist. ⠀
A sort of calm in the wild, fostered by an outdoor fire and a night sky of stars. Native birdsong and a river roar. ⠀
⠀
Hosts Tom and Lucia Gordon have generously shared part of their 6th generation family farm. ⠀
We’re feeling pretty darn lucky that this pocket of paradise is on our doorstep.⠀
⠀
We also need to share this from Tom, taken from the book Cape Country, (you’ll find this book bedside at GC) ⠀
⠀
‘That’s the whole point of living here really; it’s not about the farming so much, the farming is what you do to be able to live ⠀
— it’s about the joy of living here’ ⠀

New to The Book Club —⠀
⠀
‘Made of Wood’ offers a generous glimpse into 12 homes where timber has been lavishly applied. ⠀
All things recycled, modern, handmade and globally inspired have been showcased, making every page a joy.⠀
⠀
Sally & Mark Bailey @baileyshome are designers, makers and shopkeepers in the truest sense. ⠀
⠀
In their words — ⠀
“We’ve always believed that surrounding yourself with natural materials is a way to achieve a balanced and peaceful atmosphere in the home, and wood is the principle ingredient in that recipe for harmony.”⠀

⠀
If I asked you to describe the colour green without using the word ‘green’ I’m guessing it would look a little like this —⠀
sage, seafoam, mint, olive, jade, lime, emerald, pine and my fave, british racing green. ⠀
⠀
They say that this friendly colour gets our creative juices flowing and makes us more inventive. No surprise then that we often take inspiration from nature. ⠀
⠀
Green undoubtedly is the most relaxing colour to the eye and sits at no:2 as the most favourite colour in the world. ⠀
⠀
‘Green is the prime colour of the world, and that from which it’s loveliness arises’ ⠀
— Pedro Calderon de la Barca
⠀
Love Local, our new blog series celebrating places and makers in my hometown of Hawkes Bay.⠀
⠀
We’re starting the series with @cliftonglamping — mother nature in her finest outfit. ⠀
Perched on the hills of the Maraetotara River, hosts Tom & Lucia have generously shared its rustic glory with just enough glamp to make you never want to leave. ⠀
⠀
With my interior design hat on, I couldn’t fault the ambience within the canvas. There are lovely woven textures of sisal and rattan and many composed corners to relax and toast NZ’s best scenery. ⠀
The vibe is gentle and tranquil, earthy and rustic.⠀
⠀
‘Bathe in the sunshine, swim in the river, drink the wild air’⠀
